The Village of Vernon Hills is seeking applicants for an opening on the Planning & Zoning (P & Z) Commission.
Planning & Zoning Commission Activities
P & Z reviews new developments, including residential subdivisions and commercial projects, as well as special use permits and zoning variation requests. The Commission also makes recommendations regarding updates to the zoning code, sign regulations and the Village's Comprehensive Plan. A typical meeting might involve a public hearing to consider plans for a new restaurant, for example. The business would present plans and the Commission would then discuss potential impacts on the area, and review the layout of the property, the appearance of the building, landscaping and lighting. For examples of P & Z actions, please review videos of past meetings on the Village YouTube Channel and review appropriate meeting minutes posted on the Village's online Agenda Center.
Ideal Candidate for P & Z Commission
The ideal candidate to the Planning & Zoning Commission would be a resident dedicated to the idea of helping the Vernon Hills community continue our trajectory of high quality and sustainable growth, consistently improving access to parks, shopping areas, employment centers and neighborhoods. Experience in in planning, architecture, law, finance, engineering or construction management is desirable, but not necessary. Residency in the Village of Vernon Hills is required.
Meeting Schedule
The P & Z Commission meets on Wednesday evenings once or twice per month, depending on the need for action. Commissioners spend roughly one to two hours preparing for each meeting by reading reports provided by Village staff. A small stipend is provided for each meeting attended.
Application Process
Members of the Planning & Zoning Commission are appointed by the Village President with the advice and consent of the Board of Trustees. Residents interested in being considered for appointment to the Commission should email Community Development Director Andrew Jennings at andrewj@vhills.org. Please include a resume and brief introduction addressing the following: 1) How long you have lived in Vernon Hills; 2) Why you are interested in an appointment to the Commission; 3) Any personal experience you believe would be an asset to the Commission; and 4) Confirmation that you would be able to commit adequate time to prepare for and attend up to two evening meetings each month.
Thank you for offering to serve your community through this important work.
