The Village has been alerted to reports of aggressive solicitors, both in person and on the phone. In some of the cases, solicitors are aggressively pushing for residents to purchase energy from a third party provider. In other cases, sales people are offering free post-storm inspections or work-for-hire. In light of this increase in solicitor activity in the Village, we remind residents of a few points:
- Do not answer your door to anybody you do not know. This isn't rude, it is staying safe.
- There is no reason to answer your phone if you do not recognize the caller. Also, remember that scammers often "spoof" the caller ID so they are not necessarily who they say they are. Consider letting calls go to voicemail, and verify information before acting on requests that seem odd or extremely urgent.
- In Vernon Hills, door-to-door solicitors are supposed to register with Village Hall and carry a permit. However in recent cases, solicitors have presented fake permits not authorized by the Village.
- You do not need to engage with, respond to, or provide information for any solicitor, ever.
- If you feel uncomfortable, unsafe or wish to report an incident, please reach out to VHPD. The 911 emergency dispatch is always available to serve.
