Village of Vernon Hills Extends Waste Management (WM) Contract


  • Starts December 1, 2025
  • For Vernon Hills single-family and multi-family homes covered by the municipal franchise agreement
  • Includes garbage, recycling, yard waste and additional services
  • Services will continue uninterrupted
  • No action needed, unless you want to change your service schedule or container size


BACKGROUND

The Village of Vernon Hills contracts with a single provider for Village-wide garbage, recycling and yard waste collection. The current Waste Management (WM) contract expires November 30, 2025. The Village has agreed to a new five-year contract with WM that begins December 1, 2025. This agreement covers single-family and multi-family residences (in general, those homes with garage and driveway). Note that businesses and commercial residential properties are not covered by this franchise agreement.


PROCESS FOR CHANGING SERVICE

  • If you have no changes needed for your service, it will continue seamlessly with the changeover to the new contract on December 1, 2025.
  • If you are billed directly for WM services and want to change your pick up schedule from 2x per week to 1x per week, or if you want to change your container size, please use the new WM Vernon Hills Customer Service Portal, which WM is creating to support this transition. This portal should be operational through January 2026.
  • If you are part of an HOA that purchases WM services as a group, and you want to move your group contract from a 2x per week garbage collection to 1x per week, please provide WM with the name of your HOA, your group contract number, the change you you are requesting for the whole group, and the addresses of all residences in your group. The HOA representative should then submit this information directly to WM by sending an email to Michael Brink, WM Municipal Marketing Manager, at mbrink@wm.com.

UPSIZE OPTION

  • Under the new contract starting December 1, 2025, residents using the small 35 gallon garbage or recycling containers may upgrade to 65 gallon containers at the same price.

  • 35 gallon container:  
    1x per week collection = $24.00
    2x per week collection = $50.90
  • 64 gallon container:  
    1x per week collection = $24.00
    2x per week collection = $51.98
  • 95 gallon container:  
    1x per week collection = $25.91
    2x per week collection = $52.94

MULTI-FAMILY covered by agreement (cost per month)

  • 35 gallon container:  
    1x per week collection = $20.40
    2x per week collection = $43.27
  • 64 gallon container:  
    1x per week collection = $24.40
    2x per week collection = $43.27
  • 95 gallon container:  
    1x per week collection = $22.02
    2x per week collection = $45.00


SERVICES PROVIDED BY THE CONTRACT

  • Curbside Garbage Collection: Offered once or twice per week.
  • Curbside Recycling Collection: Provided on your primary garbage collection day.
  • Seasonal Curbside Yard Waste/Organics Collection Option: By sticker for $3.85 each; By subscription for $175 for the season (April through November). 
  • NEW Off Season Curbside Organics Collection Option: December through March for $120 for season. Minimum of 150 registered  participants required. Interested residents are asked to complete the Village’s online Organics Collection Survey .
  • NEW Organics Drop Off: Free collection at Public Works, 490 Greenleaf Drive. Site will be operational by December 1, 2025.
  • Electronics Collection: Free collection at Vernon Hills Public Works, 490 Greenleaf Drive.
  • Medical Sharps Collection: Free collection hosted by Countryside  Fire. Due to construction at the Deerpath Drive Station, sharps collection will move to CFPD Station #1, 801 S. Midlothian Road, Mundelein starting November 1, 2025
  • Senior Discount: 10 percent discount for seniors (65 years or older and head of household) on 1x week 35-gallon refuse/35-gallon recycling collection.
