[Vernon Hills, Illinois] Orchestra Festival week is almost upon us! On November 19th, 7th-graders will join Concert and Philharmonic Orchestras in the VHHS auditorium at 7:30 p.m. for a showcase of astoundingly gorgeous sounds. The concert will feature combined string performances pulling from composer heavyweights like Dvorak, Handel, Shostakovitch, Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, and many more. Come and support the fine arts at VHHS and enjoy the polish of one of the greatest orchestra programs in the nation.

CLC News

Actors age 14 and above are invited to audition for the College of Lake County’s winter production of “As You Like It.” Auditions start at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2 and Tuesday, Dec. 3 in the Studio Theatre, James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts, on the Grayslake Campus.
Those auditioning should prepare a 90-second to two-minute, memorized monologue from any Shakespeare comedy. Performers with music and/or movement training are encouraged to audition.
Actors need only attend Monday or Tuesday auditions, not both. Please bring an acting resume, if available. Callbacks take place Thursday, Dec. 5 from 6:30-10 p.m.; actors should make themselves available during that time.
Rehearsals begin Monday, Jan.13 and are held Monday through Thursday evenings, with possible weekend rehearsals based on cast availability, until tech week from Feb. 22-27. Showtimes are: Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, Feb. 29 at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, March 1 at 2 p.m.; and Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 5, 6 and 7 at 7:30 p.m. There also will be a high school matinee at 2 p.m. Friday, March 6. Actors should ensure they are available for performance dates before auditioning.
In “As You Like It,” comic twists and turns abound in the mythical Forest of Arden, where a disguised Rosalind seeks refuge after being wrongfully banished by her uncle. Her unfortunate exile is transformed into a charming adventure when she encounters some of Shakespeare’s most beloved characters—colorful fools, witty rustics and the lovesick Orlando. The story is a topsy-turvy journey into one of the most joyous worlds the Bard ever penned.
The show is being directed by Craig Rich, chair of CLC’s theatre department. For audition information, contact Rich at (847) 543-2567 or crich@clcillinois.edu. To stay current on CLC Theatre, visit the department’s Facebook page.

Vernon Hills Police Support Toys For Tots

From now until December 9, the Vernon Hills Police Department will again be a drop-off location for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program.  Last year, we collected enough toys to fill fifteen boxes.  We’d like to repeat that again this year – or beat it.
All kinds of toys can be donated.  Some ideas for older children include sporting equipment/bags/balls, books, backpacks, cosmetics, purses, watch/wallet gift sets, bath gift sets, board games, radio control cars/trucks, hand-held electronics, skateboards/helmets, curling irons, hair straighteners, and hair dryers.
The Toys for Tots program accepts new, unwrapped items.  Realistic looking weapons or gifts with food will not be accepted.  If donated, such items will NOT be distributed.
Donations can be dropped off at the following drop box locations:

  • Vernon Hills Police Department, 740 Lakeview Parkway, 24 hours-a-day
  • Vernon Hills Village Hall, 290 Evergreen Drive, Mon – Fri, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm
  • Vernon Hills Public Works, 490 Greenleaf Drive, Mon – Fri, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm

“We hope everyone joins us in making the holidays happy for children who might otherwise receive nothing,” said Patrick L. Kreis, Chief of Police.   "It would be great if we had to empty the box every single day.”
Anyone with questions should call the Vernon Hills Police Department Crime Prevention Unit at (847) 247-4889
