Volunteers Needed for AHR Charity Event

The Leahy Family Foundation is looking for volunteers to help raise money for charity and take part in one of the biggest lacrosse tournaments in the county – July 8 and 9. This will be an excellent opportunity to work up a sweat by giving back to the community. Young people can also gain volunteer experience needed for scholarship applications and resumes by joining in the experience. While we welcome students and families, we ask that any volunteers be over age 16, as volunteers will be cooking and serving hot food.

The Pipe City Lacrosse Festival is held on the American Hotel grounds and will feature 225 teams playing for nearly 25,000 spectators. The Leahy Family we will be providing the drinks and concessions for the entire tournament and all money raised will benefit worthy charities like Boys & Girls Club of Lake County, Gateway for Cancer Research, and the NSSRA.

The event requires more than 100 people between the hours of 7am and 6pm on Saturday (7/8) and Sunday (7/9). To sign up for a shift please contact Paula Motzny at 847.743.1996 or pmotzny@americanhotel.com.

Vernon Hills Alert Regarding Energy Solicitors

The Village of Vernon Hills asks residents to take extra caution when it comes to energy company solicitations. As example, the Village has been alerted that a company called Star Energy may be going door to door or making phone calls falsely implying that they are associated with the Village of Vernon Hills electric aggregation program and that residents should sign up with them for their electric energy. It has been reported that Star Energy representatives have been aggressive, with solicitors returning to residents’ homes several times, demanding to see their ComEd bills, and pushing them to sign contracts to purchase electric energy.

Star Energy is not in any way affiliated with the Village of Vernon Hills.

The Village reminds residents that the Vernon Hills electric aggregation program ended in May. In April, participants who participated in the Village’s electricity supply purchasing program should have received letters from ComEd notifying them that they were automatically being returned to ComEd for the electric supply portion of their energy bill. Residents didn’t need to take any action and were automatically moved back to ComEd at their meter read date in May, which will be reflected on ComEd bills received in June.

It is anticipated that with the suspension of the Village’s program, residents may receive more solicitations from various electric companies or suppliers. Residents are encouraged to take a look at options for their electric supply. However, when considering any solicitations, residents are advised to be aware of (and avoid) monthly fees that may be added to a fixed supply rate, early termination fees, and variable rates that may float with no upward cap on price. Never provide your ComEd account number to a solicitor unless you have contacted them directly to enroll and you have reviewed all of their terms and conditions. Do not feel pressured by supposed “deadlines” – solicitors have been using this scare tactic to push sales.

If solicitors contact you in-person and indicate that they are associated with the Village’s program, please contact the Village (847-367-3700) so that we can investigate and determine if the entity has a proper solicitor’s license. Further, remember that you never need to answer your door or the phone. If you are particularly concerned about any contact you receive, you should also consider calling 911 for emergency assistance. For more information about electric supply purchases, visit www.PlugInIllinois.org
