National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from September 15 to October 15.
The observation started in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson as Hispanic Heritage Week, and was expanded to a month by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. The beginning date - September 15 - is significant as it marks the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates Independence Day on September 16, and Chile celebrates on September 18.
