Pawfficer Billie is our first Wellness Support Dog! She regularly trains with several trained handlers within the Department. Billie is a Labrador mix who began in public service after being rescued by the staff of SIT Service Dogs (located in Ava, IL). Billie is trained to provide comfort to people during a time of crisis as interacting with a dog is a non-threatening, non-judgmental way of helping break down mental and emotional barriers. She has been assigned the following duties: critical incident mental health support, community outreach and engagement at public events, school support and demonstrations, critical incident stress management, victim forensic/criminal investigation interviews, as well as first responders/staff wellness. Billie completed her certifications and training, and entered service on May 1, 2023.
