Depending on the time of year, it's not all that unusual to see panhandlers standing on the sidewalk or on the side if the road. While some of the people you see may legitimately be in need of assistance, others are not and are simply using this ruse as an easy way to tug at your heart (and your wallet).
Remember, con artists are very good at what they do and you probably won’t be able to determine if there is a legitimate need for your money. Don’t be fooled by a cardboard sign or children that appear to be with the panhandler. It might still be a scam.
Understand, in no way are we trying to discourage you from donating money to a worthwhile cause. We just don’t want you to throw it away. Besides, there are plenty of legitimate charity organizations out there that will be happy to take your donations.
Be leery of anyone asking you for money. When in doubt, don’t do it.
