Are motorized scooters legal in Vernon Hills?
This question is asked quite often, especially whenever the media reports that a community has “banned“ them. The answer is, “No, they are not legal,” and here’s why:
Under state law, motorized scooters cannot be driven on streets or sidewalks. Locally, they are also not allowed on the paths or lots in the Vernon Hills Park District.
It makes sense when you think about it. How can a person with no training in the rules of the road be expected to safely operate one of those things and not place either himself/herself or others (especially pedestrians) in jeopardy?
Basically, the only place that they can be operated legally is on private property (with the owner’s permission). If you want to operate one on your driveway – great.
While this may not be the answer that some youths (or adults) want to hear, surely no one can argue that it is in the best interest of everyone’s safety.
