The Vernon Hills Police Department has an interesting device used to track speed in the community. It’s called StealthStat. Roughly the size of a suitcase, StealthStat is designed to be securely mounted (and locked) on a street pole where it gathers information regarding the speed of passing vehicles. In so far as the information collection, StealthStat is similar to the Department’s S.M.A.R.T. radar trailer. Unfortunately, the trailer has to be towed out to the desired location, secured, and brought in at the end of the day. This is not the case with StealthStat, which can be mounted and programmed for long periods of time. This does not mean that you'll no longer see the S.M.A.R.T. trailer. The trailer has great educational value, and its use will continue. The StealthStat DOES NOT record license numbers or take pictures of drivers. It is used solely to gather information for speed studies. Visit our Speed Studies page to learn why, when, and where we do these studies.
