Seat Belt Usage Rate

Periodically, the Illinois Department of Transportation conducts statewide studies to determine seat belt usage rates among drivers and front seat passengers.

The first survey was conducted in 1985 (before the Illinois safety belt law took effect). This initial survey revealed a usage rate of only 15.9%. Within twelve months, the usage rate had climbed to 36.2%. Since that time, there has been a gradual increase. Ready for the news?

In the most recent study, the state usage rate was found to be 91.3%!

A large part of Illinois' recent success is being attributed to the primary enforcement law that took effect in 2003. Until recently you could not be stopped solely because you were not wearing your seat belt. However, that is no longer the case.
