If you are a Vernon Hills resident, you have probably seen the interesting device that the police department uses to assist in combating speeding vehicles and to remind daydreaming drivers to watch their speed.
The Speed Monitoring Awareness Radar Trailer can be used in neighborhoods, school zones, construction sites, dangerous areas, or any other appropriate location to help promote compliance with the speed limit. The S.M.A.R.T. trailer is a portable, self-contained speed display unit that is towed to the desired location. It is left on the roadway to display speeds of oncoming vehicles on a highly visible LED (light emitting diode) display. A speed limit sign mounted on the unit reminds drivers what the actual speed limit is on the road that they are on. The unit also has the capability of recording speed data. This can be done with or without the display being lit or the sign up as in this photograph.
If you live in Vernon Hills and feel that you have a problem with speeding vehicles in your neighborhood, you are encouraged to contact the Vernon Hills Police Department's Traffic Unit and request that the S.M.A.R.T. trailer be scheduled in your area. You can do this by either calling the Traffic Concern phone number 362-4449 x4832 or request it on-line using the link below.
(NOTE: Due to the winter weather, the S.M.A.R.T. Trailer will not be used during the months of November thru March.)
