Overweight Truck Enforcement

The Illinois Vehicle Code governs the amount of weight large trucks can carry over various roadways. Violations of these laws causes a disproportionate amount of damage to our roads; believe it or not, one overweight truck can cause as much damage as nine hundred cars traveling the same route! In addition, they are very hazardous to other drivers on the road - a large number of unsafe trucks are involved in serious and fatal traffic crashes annually.

To address these problems, members of the VHPD and the State Police periodically team up with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). Portable truck scales are set up and operated by personnel from IDOT, and all passing second division vehicles are weighed to determine if they are within the tolerable weight limits.

The following pictures were taken during a special traffic enforcement detail to detect overweight and unsafe second division vehicles.
