Explorer Duties and Responsibilities

COMMUNITY SERVICE

The Vernon Hills Police Explorer Post assists the community in many ways.  The Explorers assist during the Vernon Hills Summer Celebration by helping to maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for all who attend the event.

The Explorers also assist in patrolling the area surrounding the location of the annual Winter Wonderland Holiday Light Show that is held at the Cuneo Museum & Gardens.  At the event, the Explorers help keep the roads safe and easier to travel for patrons of the show.

The Explorers also participate in community events such as the Fourth of July fireworks and the Vernon Hills High School Homecoming Parade and fireworks.

Even more important, the Explorers assist the community during times of need.  For example, not too long ago, the Explorers assisted at the scene of a major apartment building fire.  After the fire was out, they patrolled the area and assisted residents when problems arose.

In all, during the year 2008, the Vernon Hills Explorers compiled a total of 1,073 hours of community service.

DETAILS

The Vernon Hills Explorers also work closely with the community in many details throughout the year.  One such detail is the Summer Celebration.  At this event, the Explorers patrol the festival grounds and serve to help maintain a humanitarian atmosphere for the patrons of the festival.

The Explorers also assist at the Vernon Hills High School Band Competition.  The Explorers assist both the host school as well as visitors from other schools.

Members of the post also do details that benefit the businesses of the community.  For example, they pick up trash to help make the community stand out as an inviting place to work and live.

During 2008, the post completed a total of 1,434 hours of details.

RIDE ALONGS

Post 2920 has an extensive ride-along program for its members.  The ride-along program is designed to assist the Explorers in learning about the everyday shift responsibilites and job of patrol officers.  During a ride-along, the Explorer can assist the patrol officer in many ways, such as handling radio communications, directing traffic, assisting with paperwork, community relations, in-car computer functions and processing prisoners.

During 2008, members of Post 2920 put in 850 ride-along hours.
