B.A.S.S.E.T. Program

B.A.S.S.E.T. is Beverage Alcohol Sellers & Servers Education & Training. B.A.S.S.E.T. is a mandatory 6 hour (minimum) training course that must be attended by anyone who sells and/or serves alcohol in a Vernon Hills liquor establishment, such as waitresses, waiters, bartenders, and over-the-counter clerks.  The management of these establishments must also receive B.A.S.S.E.T. certification.

The state-wide B.A.S.S.E.T. program is overseen by the Illinois Liquor Control Commission.  Basically, B.A.S.S.E.T. is an education and training tool for servers and sellers of alcohol.  Topics of discussion during the 6 hour class include the effects of alcohol, the blood alcohol content (BAC) system, DUI, responsible serving of alcohol, checking of IDs, alcoholism, village ordinances and refusing or discontinuing liquor service.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Once you are hired, you have 90 days to complete your B.A.S.S.E.T. training from one of the below providers.  During that time, you must be working under the direct supervision of a person who is B.A.S.S.E.T. certified.  The Vernon Hills Police Department performs quarterly checks at each establishment that serves or sells alcohol.  If you are caught selling or serving alcohol outside these parameters, guess who gets in trouble?  That's right, both your employer and you... so take the class ASAP - it's for your own protection!

Please understand, there are many different organizations that can provide B.A.S.S.E.T. training, but they may not be accepted by the Village of Vernon Hills.  Listed below are the only accepted programs from which you may be B.A.S.S.E.T. certified in order to sell or serve alcohol within Village limits:

  1. College of Lake County (847-543-2026)
  2. Harper College (847-925-6065)
  3. Vernon Hills Police Department (no longer offered - last instructed in 2002)

At this time we are not accepting any online courses, even by the above-listed organizations.

Illinois law states an individual's B.A.S.S.E.T. certification never has to be renewed, therefore it does not expire.  With that being said, if you've had an extended break between jobs, you may want to consider attending a refresher course just to make sure you are current with all the new laws and forms of identification out there.

If you were certified through the Vernon Hills Police Department and you need a copy of your certificate, please contact Officer Sharon Joseph at 847-247-4889 or via e-mail. Please have the following information ready:

  • Year you received training (if known)
  • Establishment you worked for
  • FULL name (including maiden name, if applicable)
