April 6, 2011 - On April 5, 2011, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced that Vernon Hills High School (VHHS) was selected as a winning school in the 2011 Operation Teen Safe Driving (OTSD) program. Officer Jim Koch is responsible for bringing the program to the high school, but the students responsible for the program's success were juniors Krishna Mundada, Maryam Abdallah, Jaclyn Bernas and Courtney Umphress.
IDOT selected only 5 winning schools from each of the 7 regions. VHHS placed 4th out of 15 schools in Region 2. As a result, VHHS will receive $1,000 from IDOT to be used for post-prom activities. The four VHHS students and Officer Koch were also selected to participate in Ford Motor Company Fund's Driving Skills for Life "Ride and Drive" event on April 21st and 22nd in Chicago. The "Ride and Drive" event will feature professional drivers providing rigorous behind-the-wheel driving exercises, including hazard recognition/accident avoidance, vehicle handling/skid control, and speed/space management.
Congratulations to Officer Koch and the students for a job well done!
