April 21, 2011 - Back in November of 2009, School Resource Officer (SRO) Jim Koch introduced the Vernon Hills High School to the Operation Click! program. Operation Click! is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that urges highschool-age drivers to buckle their seat belts in order to save lives. Since the program's inception in 1998, seat belt usage by teen drivers has risen from 65% compliance to 95%.
To encourage compliance, Operation Click! provides positive reinforcement and prize giveaways. To be eligible to win prizes - including a new car - students must adhere to a signed contract which states they will wear their seat belt at all times, they will not drink and drive, they will not ride in a car with a driver who has consumed alcohol and they will not be convicted of any traffic-related violation. Throughout the year, random seatbelt checks are performed by student volunteers.
Depending on the percentage of compliance, each participating school may send one or two students to the end-of-year ceremony - and be provided with a chance to win that new car. This year's finalists are Marli Levin (junior) and Ellie Silver (senior). Marli and Ellie will accompany Officer Koch to the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates on Friday, April 29 for their chance to win a car or many other fabulous prizes.
Congratulations and good luck!
