September 7, 2011 - This weekend will not only mark the 7th Annual Law Enforcement Exhibition at Westfield Hawthorn, but also the 10th anniversary of 9/11. To honor the victims, we will be holding a special 9/11 Ceremony on Sunday, September 11 at noon in front of Mario Tricoci. Because of the Expo, we will have over 20 different law enforcement and related agencies in the mall (all weekend), so we felt it was appropriate to take a moment to reflect on the events of ten years ago. That is, after all, why we always hold the Expo on the weekend closest to September 11.
Besides the ceremony, which we welcome all to attend, we will have 4 K9 demonstrations throughout the weekend, as well as a police helicopter landing on Saturday (but not staying long), as long as we don't get that rain that's being predicted! Throughout the mall itself, will be plenty of squad cars, specialty vehicles (like a 6-wheeler, an 8-wheeler, an American flag squad, a 9/11 tribute squad...), safety information, interactive activities (Drunk Goggles, Distracted Driving) and plenty of free stuff.
The host Department, Vernon Hills (that's us), will be featuring the FATS training system. The FireArms Training Simulator is like a life-size video game, where the "player" can actually interact with the screen players and make a decision based on the facts. If shooting is involved, the computer tracks how many shots were fired and where they went. We can then review the scene to see how well the player did. The VHPD will be using the old Champs store, located lower level near JC Penney, by the kid's play area.
Right next to VHPD (in the old Flash store), will be the Illinois Freemasons with their child ID kits. These are free kits you can get that contain important information on your child, in case something ever happened. NO information is kept with the freemasons - it's all given to you.
So spend some time at the mall and see lots and lots of police officers!

All K9 demonstrations will be held in front of Victoria Secret Pink/Banana Republic, which is lower level between Sears and the center court.
