January 11, 2010 - Are you concerned about con artists using the Census to get your personal information?  Here are some tips to keep in mind:

The 2010 Census will actually be one of the shortest and simplest in U.S. history.  It will ask just 10 basic questions, including:

• Name
• Sex
• Age and date of birth
• Hispanic Origin
• Race
• Household relationship
• If you own or rent your home

It requires less personal information than a typical credit card application.  For example, the 2010 Census does NOT ask about bank account information, salary or income, citizenship or immigration status and they will NEVER ASK FOR YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER.

Census information is protected by law, so your information will not be shared, sold or disclosed to anyone, including other federal agencies or law enforcement.  Any Census employee who violates this law is subject to up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

IF YOU DO NOT WANT A CENSUS TAKER TO COME TO YOUR HOME, simply fill out the questionnaire when it is mailed to you.  If you fill out the form and mail it back, no census taker will need to come to your residence.  It also helps save money when you mail it back!

If someone comes to your door and says they are a Census taker, but you have mailed your form in, politely get their name, advise them you have already participated and then contact the US Census Bureau or your local police department.  And remember: NEVER GIVE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION TO ANYONE.
