January 17, 2011 - Welcome to the New Year! And since the beginning of a new year is a chance to make resolutions, we challenge you to resolve NOT to be a victim of a crime!
Buffalo Grove has recently reported 2 instances of Ruse Burglaries - incidents where one suspect will get the homeowner away from the front door, so their accomplice(s) can enter unseen and steal items from the home, while the homeowner is distracted.
On the afternoon of January 4, a resident reported that a male Hispanic entered the resident's home and told the resident he had recently done some work in the area and may have damaged some wires near the victim's home. This subject kept the resident occupied in the back of the home while another suspect entered the home and removed jewelry.
On January 8, a male Hispanic told a resident he would be doing some work near the resident's backyard and he wanted to show the resident where the work would be performed. Luckily, the resident became suspicious and told the suspect he was calling the police. The suspect fled - along with his two accomplices who had been on the second floor of the residence. The 3 suspects left the area in a maroon mini van, possibly a Dodge.
In both cases, the main suspect is described as clean-shaven male Hispanic, about 6 feet tall, 225-250 pounds, wearing a baseball cap or winter cap and work clothes.
Please remember: DO NOT allow strangers into your home (or allow them to lure you away from your unlocked front door). If you have someone come to your door with a story similar to these, tell them they'll have to come back some other time and close the door. Try to get a license plate if it can be done safely. Also be aware of any occupied vehicles in your neighborhood and call the police.
If you have been a victim of a scam, please don't be embarassed to contact your local police department for help. Too many criminals get away with their crimes because the victim is reluctant to admit they were scammed.
