Spring 2016 CPA - Week 9
DUI Laws & Enforcement
Impaired driving is the most frequently committed violent crime in America.  Every 30 minutes, someone in this country dies in an alcohol-related crash.

Americans agree that drinking and driving is a serious problem.  Social norms have changed.  Fewer people are drinking and driving - and more are getting caught when they do.  Equally important, Americans support the strict enforcement of these laws and swift and fair sentencing for offenders.

The Vernon Hills Police Department continues to make the enforcement of DUI violations a top priority.  This enforcement takes place in everyday patrol duties, special DUI patrols and rapid reaction to citizen reports.

In this week of the Citizen's Police Academy, participant received in-depth instruction on the detection, enforcement, prosecution and penalties pertaining this most dangerous of all traffic violations.

In addition to hearing from Investigator Rebecca Foy, the participants were also fortunate to meet and listen to the Honorable Daniel B. Shanes. As a judge in the 19th Judicial Circuit Court (that serves Lake County) Judge Shanes has had much experience on the topic and he shared much of his knowledge and insight with the class.
