Active Shooter Information

Sadly, every so often, these things happen.  So it's always a good idea to think "what if.....".

An active shooter is an individual who is actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and/or populated area.  In most cases, active shooters use firearms and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims.  Active shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly.

The City of Houston (Texas), with a grant from the Department of Homeland Security, has created a very informative, yet brief, video regarding this frightening topic.  It highlights the importance of having a plan, whether that is to Run, Hide or Fight. (Which is also the name of the video.)  A link to the video follows these bullet points:

Run - when an active shooter is in your vicinity

  • If there is an escape path, attempt to evacuate.
  • Evacuate whether others agree to or not.
  • Leave your personal belongings behind.
  • Help others escape if possible.
  • Prevent others from entering the area
  • Call 911 when you are safe.

Hide - if evacuation is not possible, find a place to hide.

  • Lock and/ or blockade the door.
  • Silence your cell phone.
  • Hide behind large objects.
  • Remain very quiet.
  • Your hiding place should:
    • Be out of the shooter's view.
    • Provide protection if shots are fired in your direction.
    • Not trap or restrict your options for movement.

Fight - As a last resort, and only if your life is in danger

  • Attempt to incapacitate the shooter.
  • Act with physical aggression.
  • Improvise weapons.
  • Commit to your actions.

Once you are safe, call 911.  When law enforcement arrives:

  • Remain calm and follow instructions.
  • Keep your hands visible at all times.
  • Avoid pointing and yelling.
  • Know that help for the injured is on its way.

Always know your environment and always have an exit plan.
