The mission of the Public Works Department is to enhance community order, health, safety, and aesthetics through proper administration and good management of the review, design, construction, and maintenance of the Village’s infrastructure.

Improving the EnvironmentPublic Works Building
The department is committed to the improvement and enhancement of the environment. They do this through:
  • A continued commitment to an active forestry program
  • The establishment of solid waste programs that promote environmentally sensitive alternatives such as recycling and composting
  • The use of storm water management techniques that promote water quality

Department Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Public Works Department include maintenance and repair of the Village infrastructure, property, and equipment. Public Works has the greatest variety of responsibilities of any Village department by providing many of the basic services that affect the daily lives of everyone who lives and works in Vernon Hills.

The Department also provides:
  • Coordination, setup, and tear down of all Village sponsored events
  • Flood assistance
  • Snow and ice control
  • Variety of other services throughout year

Village Infrastructure
Primarily, the responsibilities encompass the administration, planning, maintenance, construction management, and technical engineering of the Village’s infrastructure.

The Village infrastructure includes:
  • Landscaping
  • Other capital facilities
  • Street maintenance
  • The transportation system
  • The stormwater collection system
  • Vehicle maintenance
