National Night Out
Another National Night Out in in the Books!

Every first Tuesday of August, millions of people celebrate
National Night Out (NNO) in neighborhoods across the country to celebrate community and law enforcement partnerships.

NNO brings together individuals from communities in all 50 states, United States territories, and military bases worldwide. This includes:
  • Businesses
  • Citizens
  • Community groups
  • Law enforcement agencies
  • Officials
  • Youth organizations

Over 35 million people in over 12,000 communities celebrated NNO last year.

Mission of National Night Out
The mission of National Night Out is to:
  • Generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs
  • Heighten crime prevention awareness
  • Send a message to criminals, letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships

The VHPD 21st Annual NNO Event

The 2016 National Night Out event was held on Tuesday, August 2, in Hartmann Park on Oakwood Rd. It was our 21st year of participating in National Night Out. We had have free food and ice cream, games to play, several inflatables to jump on, face painting, VHPD patch tattoos, a water spray and enough music to get everyone moving. The bookmobile from the Cook Memorial Library was also on hand as were the Vernon Hills Queens and representatives from the Boy Scouts. State Representative Carol Sente, Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran and Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court Keith Brin also stopped by to say hello.

The Numbers

As has been the case for many years, the crowd was huge. We served up approximately 720 hot dogs, 400 hamburgers, 300 chicken sandwiches (thanks to Chick-fil-A), approximately 700 bottles of water, 1000 cans of pop, 1400 bags of snacks and 600 ice cream bars. (That's a lot of food!)

As always, NNO is completely free and is meant for our residents to come out and get to know their neighbors as well as the police department members.

12th Annual Volleyball Matches
Due to some last minute unforeseen events, a couple VHPD challengers were unable to play. Nevertheless, a team from VHPD successful retained bragging rights by defeating teams from both Target and the Summer Celebration Committee.

Our Sponsors
Our local sponsors for NNO 2016 were A-Z Entertainment, Record-A-HitTricoci University of Beauty Culture, the Vernon Hills Chick-fil-A, the Vernon Hills Park District, Target and the Countryside Fire Protection District. The entire event would not have been possible without the cooperation of the Vernon Hills Public Works Department.

A special "thank you" to the Target Corporation for providing a grant in the amount of $1,000.00 for the event.

National sponsors of NNO include AssociaNextdoor, and ADT.  (In fact, a representative from ADT was on hand all night to answer any questions.)

Our Volunteers
Trying to pull off an event like NNO would not be possible without the assistance of many, many volunteers. Huge thanks goes out to some our Citizen's Police Academy graduates, many, many Vernon Hills Target employees and other great Vernon Hills residents who graciously donated their time to help serve food, help with the children's games, distribute children's tattoos and take the pictures shown below.

Thinking about 2017
No doubt we will do it all again on Tuesday, August 1, 2017. We hope to see you then. In the meantime, you can call 847-247-4889 for further information or if you have any questions or suggestions.
