The mission of the Public Works Department is to enhance community order, health, safety, and aesthetics through proper administration and good management of the review, design, construction, and maintenance of the Village’s infrastructure. The Department is committed to the improvement and enhancement of the environment through the use of storm water management techniques that promote water quality, through a continued commitment to an active forestry program, and through the establishment of solid waste programs that promote environmentally sensitive alternatives such as recycling and composting.
The responsibilities of the Public Works Department include maintenance and repair of the Village infrastructure, property and equipment. Public Works has the greatest variety of responsibilities of any Village department by providing many of the basic services that affect the daily lives of everyone who lives and works in Vernon Hills. Primarily, the responsibilities encompass the administration, planning, maintenance, construction management and technical engineering of the Village’s infrastructure. The Village infrastructure includes the transportation system, stormwater collection system, street maintenance, landscaping, and vehicle maintenance and other capital facilities. The Department also provides snow and ice control, flood assistance and a variety of services throughout year. The department is divided into five divisions: Engineering, Electrical, Forestry & Grounds, Streets and Fleet Services.
