RETAINING WALL AT ROUTE 83/NORTHFIELD DRIVE
JUNE 25, 2010
The Public Works Department is making repairs to the retaining wall at Route 83 and Northfield. After the work is completed, plantings similar to the southside of the roadway will be installed. This work will be completed by July 14th. Thank you for your patience as this area receives a much needed make-over. For comments or questions please contact David Brown, Director of Public Works
POWER OUTAGES
JUNE 25, 2010
In the past week several neighborhoods in the Village including Country Club Estates and Hawthorn Club experienced electrical outages. Some of our residents were out of power from Friday night until the following Monday afternoon. There were major weather problems that created outages for over 500,000 of ComEd's customers. However several of our residents reported that before the storms they experienced power outages of various frequencies and duration. The Village Staff will meet with ComEd representatives to discuss these reliability issues. We look forward to providing further information to residents.
RUN FORM THE COPS 5K RUN
June 24, 2010
On Sunday, July 18, 2010, at 8:30 AM, the Vernon Hills Police Department will be hosting its third annual 5K race, which will run in conjunction with the Village’s Summer Celebration Festival. Participants in the event, known as the ‘Run From The Cops’ 5K, may either run or walk a scenic course starting at the Summer Celebration site and extending up and through the Gregg's Landing subdivision, before ending back at the festival grounds.
100% of the money raised from this event will go directly to the Sentinels of Freedom, who provide four year ‘life scholarships’ to help injured US Service Members become self-sufficient after returning home.
The first two years of the 5K rose close to $20,000 for US Veteran’s causes. “Each year this race draws more people and it has quickly turned into a mainstay community event,” stated Race Coordinator Officer Jeff Cielak. “We owe it to our injured Vets to make their transition from the battlefield back to home life as easy as possible.”
The $30 registration fee includes a commemorative t-shirt and a post-race continental breakfast. For more specific race details or to register, visit VHPD.com. For further information, call Officer Jeff Cielak at 847-362-4449.
VHPD and OMNI
June 10, 2010 - The Village of Vernon Hills is excited to announce that we have partnered with OMNI Youth Services to provide social services to families and/or individuals who have been referred by the Vernon Hills Police Department. These services will be provided by OMNI Social Worker, Mr. Vel Vetri, at the Vernon Hills Police Department or in the community as needed.
OMNI Youth Services is the largest and most comprehensive youth development organization serving the needs of Chicago's northwest suburbs. They no only focus on resolving existing problems, but pursue the development of skills for life.

JULY 4 TH UPDATES & ACTIVITIES
June 9, 2010
Just a reminder that the July 4th Parade committee is preparing to do the line up for the parade and we are missing many of our regular applicants. If you haven’t already completed your applicant please register online or download the application as soon as possible. Late applicants may be placed at the end of the parade.
The celebrations get under way at 8:00 am at the corner of Deerpath and Atrium Blvd. Youngsters ages 4-12 are encouraged to decorate their bikes, scooters and wagons with banners, flags and other creative ideas for the Bike Decorating Contest. The first & second place winners will receive a certificate for a day at the Vernon Hills Park District Aquatic Center. All participants entering the contest will receive a ribbon and other prizes. No registration required. Contestants are invited to ride in the parade as long as accompanied by an adult.
The Vernon Hills Public Works Department with the Assistance of Club Scout Troop 273 and Boy Scout Troop 273 will be doing a Food Drive along the parade route to collect items for the Vernon Township Food Pantry. So when you are packing your items for the parade, remember a couple non-perishable items for those in need.
HELP KEEP VERNON HILLS GREEN: Recycle bins and trash containers will also be placed along the parade route for your convenience.
ROAD CLOSURES IN DEERPATH: Residents are reminded that Deerpath Drive, Sullivan Drive and Aspen Drive will be closed to traffic during the parade. Deerpath Drive will be blocked off at 8:30 to all traffic except emergency vehicles. Traffic will be allowed to exit Sullivan and Aspen until 8:45 and then will be closed to traffic. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Join us at Century Park from 6:30 to 9:30 PM for the rhythmic sounds of J.P. and the Cats. A special thanks to the Vernon Hills Park District for generously sponsoring this entertaining music group. At approximately 9:30 PM Mayor Byrne will set the skies over Big Bear and Little Bear Lake ablaze with color as Melrose Pyrotechnics, Inc presents a dazzling aerial display of fireworks.

A Word About Grass and Yard Waste
June 4, 2010
It’s the season for summer yard work and we know that sometimes it’s difficult to keep up with the grass cutting and hedge trimming. That said, the Village has regulations in place to protect residents from nuisance situations.
The ordinance states that grass should be kept at a height of less than 6 inches. Additionally, trees and shrubs should be trimmed and maintained so as not to create a hazard. For instance, you are required to keep your hedges next to sidewalks trimmed back out of the way of walkers or bike riders.
Yard waste such as grass clippings should be stored out of site: 1) Within your garage; 2) At the side of your garage screened by landscaping or 15’-0” back from the front; or 3) At the back of your house. Yard waste may be placed at the curb after 5:00 PM the day before your scheduled pick up.
More information is available by contacting the Village Hall, 847-367-3700. Thank you for keeping Vernon Hills looking good.
