The Vernon Hills Police Department has a substation at Westfield Hawthorn mall. The substation is not manned at all times, but is used on a case-by-case basis.
The substation is used as a facility for officers to meet with victims and take reports in private, re-unite lost children with their parents, and for officers to store their personal gear when conducting operations at the mall.
The substation was officially opened on March 16, 2004. The creation (and continued use) of the facility was a joint effort between the VHPD and the management/owners of Westfield Hawthorn.
