As illustrated on the Department organizational chart, the Vernon Hills Police Department is separated into two major divisions, the Operations Division and the Support Services Division.

The goal of the Operations Division is to address community problems and assure a safe community environment through directed and routine patrol.  The Operations Division is primarily comprised of sworn officers of the Department, including the Patrol Section and Investigations Section.  The Operations Division proactively addresses community problems and uses various additional specialized units to deliver police services to village residents.  These units include Community Service Officers, Bicycle Patrol and the Traffic Unit.

The Support Services Division has a variety of responsibilities in the Vernon Hills Police Department, focusing on the areas of Communications, Records, Social Services, property/evidence, accreditation and Crime Prevention.
