The Village of Vernon Hills asks residents to take extra caution when it comes to energy company solicitations. The Village has been alerted that energy-related companies may be going door to door or making phone calls falsely implying that they are associated with the Village of Vernon Hills and that residents must sign up with them for their electric energy. It has been reported that sales agents have been aggressive, demanding to see residents’ ComEd bills, and pushing individuals to quickly sign contracts.
The Village of Vernon Hills is not affiliated with any energy company. Further, residents are encouraged to take their time, do their research, and read the fine print before entering into any agreements.
Residents are always encouraged to take a look at options for the electric supply portion of their ComEd bill. However, when considering any solicitations, residents are advised to be aware of (and avoid) monthly fees that may be added to a fixed supply rate, early termination fees, and variable rates that may float with no upward cap on price. Never provide your ComEd account number to a solicitor unless you have contacted them directly to enroll and you have reviewed all of their terms and conditions. Do not feel pressured by supposed “deadlines” – solicitors have been using this scare tactic to push sales.
If solicitors contact you indicating that they are associated with the Village, please contact Village Hall (847-367-3700) so that we can investigate and determine if the entity has a proper solicitor’s license. Further, remember that you never need to answer your door or the phone. If you are concerned about any contact, consider calling 911 for emergency assistance. Information about electric supply purchase is available at www.PlugInIllinois.org.
